Going to India and America
Christopher Columbus wanted to go to India by boat because people were getting attacked by bandits when they went on foot. So Christopher Columbus got ships from queen of Spain. The queen’s name was Isabella. Columbus got 3 boats named Santa Marina, Nina and Pinta. When Columbus left Spain he saw and heard Jews while they were getting kicked out of Spain in 1942. After sailing for a very long time his sailors were getting scurvy. Then Columbus saw Florida and landed. That is in the Americas!! Not India, where he wanted to be going. ``Ah, India”, he said. He saw Native Americans and called them Indians. The Americans traded sweet potatoes, green parrots and green peppers.
Vasco da Gama
Vasco da Gama went to India by boat around the tip of Africa. The date was 1497-1498 and he travelled to the east.
Amerigo Vespucci went to America and realised that it was another continent. He went to the north and south Americas by boat. He published books about his journeys in 1499-1500 and 1501-1502. It was named after him and called America.
Magellan went west to India via South America in 1521-1522 and went through the Magellan Straights. Magellan called the sea on the other side the Pacific; which means calm. The next land Magellan went to was the Marianas Islands where he stopped for food and water. Then he came to the Philippines where he was killed in a battle and his Lieutenant took over his ship. Then the lieutenant sailed to India and then sailed his ship back home.
